The Community Nursery is a functional nursery for plant production by staff and volunteers as well as a hands-on resource for controlled student access and use.

The Nursery is designed for sterile and non-sterile plant propogation zones and secure areas for the propagation and storage of plant material for use in Centennial Parklands.

The Parklands' Horticulturalists will provide on-site guidance and assistance to the growing group volunteers in sourcing appropriate plant material for propagation, identifying plants required for future landscaping projects, assisting in propagation activities as well as participating in other general Horticultural activities.

Volunteer Growing Group

A volunteer Growing Group has been established using the facility to propagate plant material for planting within the Parklands and also to raise funds through plant sales.

Growing Group Volunteers will have access to the Nursery site anytime during Park opening hours as per existing arrangements.

Volunteers focus on propagating plant species found within the Parklands Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (ESBS) threatened species sites, and also the exotic species found growing within the Parklands Horticultural displays.

Propagation of the ESBS species increases awareness of the Parklands threatened species areas, whilst the propagation of exotics for plant sales increases community knowledge of the plants used within the Parklands horticultural precinct.

Features

The nursery area is contained within a locked mesh fence within the Education Precinct. It features:

• Three protected environments that provide the climate required plants to grow and include a hothouse and shade houses.
• Potting bench suitable for use by adults underneath a shade structure - comfortably accommodate up to 10 adults - providing space to carry out plant propagation, including seed sowing, cuttings and potting up container grown stock
• Nursery shed containing horticultural materials and small administrative area
• Potable water is available at each shade house, with hoses and approved trigger nozzles
• Standing out area is covered in gravel, providing space for plants that are ready for use in Horticultural Estate projects or for sale by the Growing Group at Plant Sales
• Access to the site is restricted by a chain link fence and locked gates, this is to prevent unauthorised access
• Four table gardens
